May 03, 2008 Ex-Angels Report 5/3/08
Notes & Stats from Former Angels
Troy Percival continues to dominate for Tampa Bay. In 10 outings, he has 6 saves, an era of 0.00 and a batting average against of .063. In 10 innings, he has struck out 9 and walked one. In 8 of his 10 games nobody has reached first base.
The Brewers released relief pitcher Derrick Turnbow.
Rays' RP Gary Glover was placed on the 15-Day DL with tendinitis in his shoulder.
Phillies RP JC Romero allowed a run yesterday snapping his streak of 28.1 ip without allowing an earned run.
If you think Garret Anderson's .224 batting average is bad, imagine what manager Bud Black think's of Jim Edmonds' .160 average for the Padres this season. Edmonds, who was acquired in the offseason from St Louis, recently had an 0-for-22 slump.
Jose Guillen isn't faring much better for the Royals. He's hitting .176 in 108 at-bats. Can we blame the lack of steroids for the low average?
Speaking of steroids, Troy Glaus hit his first home run of the season last week. That's one home run per 105 at-bats for the former slugger.
Glaus' team mate Adam Kennedy has seen his average improve almost 100 points since last year. He's hitting .314 compared to .219 in 2007.
In limited action, Astro Darin Erstad is hitting .302 (13-for-43), but is having trouble as a pinch hitter where he is only 1-for-12.
Orlando Cabrera continues to struggle and hit just .217 in April.
Royal second baseman Alberto Callaspo has hit safely in all 10 games in which he has had at least two at-bats.
At Triple-A Albuquerque, Dallas McPherson has 10 home runs and a .282 for the Marlins farm club.

May 01, 2008 #77 Coming back to the Show

The Angels optioned infielder Matt Brown to Triple-A Salt Lake and recalled outfielder Reggie Willits after Thursday's loss to the A's. Willits, who is hitting .313 with the Bees this season, was added for depth. Scioscia said, "Some of our guys in the outfield have played a lot and we're going to rotate him in and see if we can get him some at-bats this weekend and get some guys off their feet,"
There were a small number of hints that Willits might be making a shift this season but when Reggie made it to the big leagues with the Halos in 06 he never imagined the team would go through his options bouncing him from triple-A to the big leagues and back, but he’s been rational when taking into account the adjustments.
“It’s nothing I can control. If you look at that outfield, they’ve got four outfielders, and two will probably be in the Hall of Fame. I knew if I was with the Angels, playing time would be depleted. I was waiting and watching because I was in virtually every trade rumor you could even imagine. I had no idea where I would be. You say to yourself that once you get to the major league level and prove that you can play at that level you won’t ever have to worry about coming back. I’ve found that’s not the case,”
Willits has managed to keep an upbeat outlook, nonetheless, recognizing that business in baseball can be more about a numbers game than a measure of playing ability or even the human aspect behind the scenes. But what's more the understandable frustration of not playing in Anaheim, Willits has also had to struggle with displacing his family from their home in California, “We still have a place there. That’s the hardest part. If it had been me, by myself, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. When you have a wife and two kids, it’s something else.”
Instead of begrudging his recent fate, Willits has taken the chance to get in more playing time. “I get to come here and go play every day and prepare myself to go back if there's an injury. You’ve got to be patient and wait your turn. There are a lot of other teams out there. You’ve got to play hard because they’re watching too. So whenever you step on the field, whether it’s a major league field or a triple-A field, you’ve got to go out there and play with your all. It’s your resume you’re putting on the field that night.”
But Willits says he isn’t looking to make a big league change anytime soon. He was asked if he would like to be traded, he replied, “I hope not. I really like the Angels organization. That team will compete for a world championship as long as Mike Scioscia is manager. It just comes down to getting opportunities to play.” But will it be for the Halo’s or some unknown team where the grass maybe greener but the atmosphere definitely will not be as bright. Let’s face it, who else has been named number one organization in Baseball by the fans five years in a row?

April 30, 2008 Top Prospect Adenhart To Make Debut
Top pitching prospect, Nick Adenhart, will make his big league debut tomorrow as the starting pitcher for the Angels against the Oakland A's.
Adenhart, 21, was 4-0 at Triple-A Salt Lake with a 0.87 era. Adenhart made 3 starts in spring training with the Angels going 1-1 with a 4.26 era.

April 29, 2008 Lackey Has Good Outing
John Lackey made his second rehab start today for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga in a game against the Lancaster Jet Hawks.
Lackey started and gave up one run in three innings. He allowed one hit (a single) and one walk while striking out two. Posted by 27 | Permalink | 0 Comments
April 29, 2008 Which Nick Is Next?
The Angels have announced that Dustin Moseley has been removed from the starting line up and placed in the bull pen. Moseley pitched two innings of relief last night in an outing which could have been used as his 'between outings' workout. Instead, Moseley and his 6.75 era are moving to left field. The move was inevitable as John Lackey has been working rehab assignments and was scheduled to take Moseley's spot.
With Moseley's spot coming up on Thursday, the big question is who will get the spot start? Nick Green or Nick Adenhart?
Nick Green, 23, is scheduled to pitch for Salt Lake on Thursday so he seems to be a logical choice. The 6'4" righty has a record of 2-0 in five starts this season with an era of 3.41.
Nick Adenhart, 21, would be the popular choice, but he would be pitching on short rest as he is scheduled to pitch Friday. Adenhart is 4-0 in five starts with an 0.87 era. Adenhart is also a bit of a logistical problem since he is not on the 40-man roster, whereas Green is. Posted by 27 | Permalink | 0 Comments
April 28, 2008 Bobby Wilson singles in MLB Debut
The Angels today called up catcher Bobby Wilson from Triple-A Salt Lake to provide catching depth while Jeff Mathis recovers from the flu.
Wilson, 24, was hitting .339 (21-for-62) for the Bees. Wilson has some power, but has yet to show it this season - of his 21 hits, 15 were singles and 6 were doubles.
Last year in 90 games between Double-A Arkansas and Salt Lake, Wilson hit 88/313 with 9 home runs and 39 runs batted in.
Besides catcher, Wilson has played a few games at first base; a position that is currently filled by Wilson's childhood team mate, Casey Kotchman.
In tonight's 14-2 loss to Oakland, Wilson replaced Mike Napoli in the 8th inning and singled on a 3-2 pitch in the 9th inning for his first career hit.
Pitchers Rich Thompson and Jose Arrendondo were sent back to Salt Lake to make room for Wilson and Brandon Wood. Posted by 27 | Permalink | 0 Comments
April 28, 2008 Salt Lake now 21-1
Ten days ago I wrote an entry on the fast 12-1 start that the Angels' Triple-A affiliate was having. It's now reaching epic proportions. Salt Lake is 21-1 after today's win - their club-record 13th in a row.
Super prospect Nick Adenhart went 8 innings allowing just one run on three hits. He is now 4-0 on the season with a league leading era of 0.87. His batting average against is .170. Lefties are hitting .090 against him. His four wins tie him for the league lead with team mate Shane Loux and two others. Loux is 4-0 in four starts with an era of 1.40.
As a team, the Bees lead the Pacific coast League with an era of 3.21.
Offensively, the team leads the PCL in average (.317), runs (161) and rbi (146).
Third baseman Matt Brown is second in the league with a .429 (42-for-98) batting average. He is also third in the league with 21 runs batted in.
Brandon Wood leads the league with 8 home runs and now has his batting average up to .273.

April 26, 2008 Guerrero Gets 2000th Hit
Vladimir Guerrero's double in the 8th inning of today's game was the 2000th hit of his career. 765 of those hits have come with the Angels. Guerrero is the 249th player in MLB history to reach the 2000 hit plateau and the first Angel to do so since Garret Anderson in 2006.
Here is a list of all the players with at least 2000 career hits who have suited up for the Halos:
3255 Eddie Murray 3110 Dave Winfield 3055 Rickey Henderson 3053 Rod Carew

April 25, 2008 Arredondo Set To Make MLB Debut
The Angels bullpen has been busy lately so the Halos called up Rich Thompson and Jose Arredondo from Salt Lake. To make room on their roster, they sent Kendry Morales and Sean Rodriguez back to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Thompson started the year with the Angels, but was sent down after just one outing in which he pitched one inning and allowed five earned runs. At Salt Lake, Thompson appeared in 5 games with an era of 2.57 in seven innings.
Arredondo, 24, is the closer for the Bees and has seven saves to go with his 1.80 era. In ten innings of work, he has 8 strike outs and 3 walks. Opposing batters are hitting .229 against him. During spring training, he pitched 5 innings (5 games) without allowing a hit.
Arredondo was originally signed by the Angels in 2002 out of the Dominican Republic. He was used as a starter up until last season when he became a closer. He saved 4 games at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and 10 games at Double-A Arkansas. He finished the season at Salt Lake making two appearances but not recording a save.
Rodriguez made his MLB debut last Saturday and had one single in four at-bats.
Morales did not see any action while with the Angels this past week. Posted by 27 | Permalink | 0 Comments
